As we roll into 20th July, that magical time of year when half the workforce is either on annual leave, thinking about annual leave, or mentally already on a beach somewhere, it’s a good moment to remind ourselves of a few summer safety basics.
Because nothing ruins a sunny day faster than a preventable accident… except maybe someone microwaving smelly food in the staff kitchen.
☀️ 1. Sun Safety: The Great British Paradox
We spend 10 months of the year complaining we never see the sun, and the moment it appears, we act like we’ve never met it before.
- Apply sunscreen — especially if you work outdoors or near windows that turn your office into a greenhouse.
- Stay hydrated — coffee doesn’t count, even if it’s iced.🔥 2. Hot Weather + PPE = The Ultimate Test of Character
- Wearing PPE in July is a bit like wearing a winter coat in a sauna — but it’s still essential.
- Gloves, goggles, masks, boots… yes, still required.
- No, “but it’s boiling” is not a COSHH exemption.
- If you’re melting, report it. If your PPE is melting, definitely report it.
- Take breaks — heat exhaustion is real, even if your manager insists it’s “just warm”.
🚧 3. Warehouse Safety: The Summer Edition
With people in holiday mode, forklifts and pallet
- Stay in designated areas — even if the shortest route to the fan is through the loading bay.
- Report hazards — especially those mysterious puddles that appear when someone forgets to close the roller door during a rain shower.
- Keep communication clear — shouting “BEHIND YOU!” is not a recognised safety protocol.
🧊 4. The Office Fridge: A Seasonal Biohazard
Every summer, the fridge becomes a science experiment.
- If your lunch has grown legs, it’s no longer your lunch.
- If something smells like it could strip paint, dispose of it safely.
- If you don’t know what it is… don’t open it.
🌡️ 5. Heat + Tools = A Comedy Waiting to Happen
Metal tools left in the sun turn into tiny branding irons. Plastic tools left in the sun turn into modern art. Either way, store equipment properly — your hands will thank you.
😎 Final Thought
- Health and Safety isn’t about ruining the fun — it’s about making sure everyone gets to enjoy the summer without a trip to A&E or a risk assessment titled “The Incident With the Sun‑Baked Hammer”.
- Stay safe, stay sensible, and stay hydrated. And if you’re lucky enough to be on holiday between now and September … we’re not jealous at all.
